What Are Wooden Pallets Treated With?

Wooden pallets must be heat treated if they are to be transported across countries. This is part of the ISPM 15 requirements for ensuring maritime hygiene.

As a result of the volume of wooden packaging being transported, there is a globally agreed-upon examination to ensure that there are no bugs lurking within the wood. ISPM15, or the International Phytosanitary Standard for Wood Packaging, mandates that all timber forms of packaging, including pallets, be heat-treated before shipping.

Why Are Wooden Pallets Heat Treated?

The IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) produced ISPM15, or the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, with the goal of reducing pests in transportation. Because pests are frequently related with the movement of raw wood packaging material, the procedure is essential.

What is the heat treatment process?

Heat treatment is a meticulous technique that necessitates a high level of skill and expertise. The timber must be debarked because only the core is required. The temperature must be at least 56°C for it to be heat-treated properly. This must be high enough to expel moisture from the pallet, which would have allowed rot to occur.

Why is heat treating pallets important?

The International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures are critical for reducing pests and infestations. It is becoming increasingly important to heat treat pallets in order to prevent these pests from crossing international borders and generating further problems.

There is more labour necessary to comply with this law, therefore, it is critical that safeguards are taken prior to shipping. Without compliance, there may be shipment delays, producing problems between the client and the manufacturer. As the guideline only applies to packing made of raw wood, this includes constructions made of wood that are connected together, such as crates. As a result, warehouse owners must get familiar with the regulations.
